12 Tips for Improving MIG Welding

Making a mistake and getting away with it just by saying sorry does not always work. Sometimes you have to make up for what you did. Well, I know I sound like I am about to tell you some life hacks, but I am not.

It is just that two days ago I went to my aunt’s house and there I broke her stool which she bought from a carnival and never let anyone use it. She pretended to be alright but I know she is not! So right after I got home, I started to weld some metal for making the base of a stool.

I used a MIG welding machine. After I am done with the weld, I found tons of errors with it. It reminded me that it has been a while I worked with a MIG machine. Later on, I looked for some tips that I can use to regain my skills and upgrade them as well. Here I am going to tell you about it.

What is MIG welding?

Gas metal arc welding is referred to as MIG welding. It is an automatic or semi-automatic welding process. A wire is connected with a DC source that acts as an electrode for joining two pieces of metal while it is continuously passed through a welding machine.

If you have basic skills and you are aware of the preventive measures that you are supposed to take while working with a MIG welder, you will be able to get good results.

Moreover, if you want to do better, you have to follow some apparent rules that are mentioned below:

1. Try to Keep It Clean

The most common issue with MIG welder is porosity. Porosity is caused by welding an oily, untidy, painted surface. Henceforth, you need to do everything to remove dirt, rust, paint and all contaminants from the surface.

Always try to prepare your workplace before start working.

2. Use Your Both Hands

Welding is undoubtedly a very complicated task. Since it includes a machine which might start functioning wrong if you are not careful enough while operating it, you should use both of your hands while doing your weld.

Use one of your hands to hold the flux of the gun’s neck and use another one to hold the part with the trigger.

3. Keep the Arc Straightforward

Try to keep the arc at the top corner of the weld puddle to get better penetration.

4. Look for a Safe MIG Welding Operator

Even if you have excellent skills in welding, if you are not cautious enough, you might end up getting into mechanical hazards or getting a bad weld.

Hot parts, fumes, unhealthy gases, arc rays, electric shock, all of these are included in the task. Besides, infrared and ultraviolet rays can be very much harmful to your skin as well.

In this regard, you should get yourself a MIG welder that keeps you aloof from all the troubles. Keep in consideration that extensive MIG welding sometimes produces a lot of sparks, spatter and heat. Therefore, we use thick leather gloves that can provide you with more protection.

5. Research on Your Setup Equipment

Before starting with your work, conduct some research based on the setup that you are going to make. Do check the welding machine and other accessories. If it’s needed, consult with a welding expert too.

6. Tighten All the Connections before Getting Started

Make sure you connected everything correctly before start welding. Moreover, be ascertained that there is no spatter accumulation on your goods. In inclusion, make a habit of cleaning the welding wire and other parts regularly as well.

7. Select the Accurate Drive Roll

Selecting the proper drive roll is a very crucial aspect since an improper one can get you poor wire feeding. Before attaching a wire, make sure it matches with drive roll, its type and size.

8. Choose the Appropriate Welding Technique

Always use the right method for a specific work even the generic way of doing all jobs might not help you with doing a certain task. Although when it comes to MIG welding, bothering about the welding technique is not an obvious.

Nevertheless, it never harms to have a thought about it and to apply the appropriate technique while doing your work.

9. Use the Most Suitable Shielding Gas

Choose a gas that is suitable for your wire. CO2 is cheaper than argon and is ideal for thinner materials. If you need to make deep penetration, go for a 25 percent CO2/ 75 percent argon mix. It produces fewer spatter than unmixed CO2.

Use either straight CO2 or 75 percent CO2/25 percent argon mix if you are using a solid carbon steel wire. Likewise, if you are using aluminum wire, you must use argon shielding gas. On the other hand, a mixture of helium, CO2, and argon can be used for stainless steel wire.

10. Choose a Good Ground Clamp

Ground clamp is a metal strip that is used for making electrical connection with the ground. If you do not have issues with your ground clamp, your machine may not work correctly which might end up making a bad weld.

However, if you cannot manage a suitable place for it, weld a bolt onto your work place to serve the purpose.

11. Adjust Your Machine

Before getting into the actual work, do some warm-ups like practice what you are going to do using some discarded metal.

12. Use Proper Accessories

To develop your working skills, you do not only need to know about the working procedures but also about the other assisting factors such as fully cover your skin with gloves, helmet, shoes, and clothes. Use heat resistant fibers as your clothing and avoid wearing synthetic materials that may melt if get hit by spattering.


MIG welding is one of the most natural welding techniques for beginners.

On the other hand, if you have been welding for a good amount of time and want to upgrade your skills along with following the mentioned tips, try to practice as much as you can.

There is no alternative to practice for sharpening your efficiencies.
