How to Make Stencils: Easy Instructions

With this stencil, you can make a beautiful sunflower that will last for years. You’ll need some supplies to get started. Find the instructions below. Happy crafting.

What You Need

  1. Printable stencil
  2. Blank stencil sheets
  3. Cutting mat
  4. Precision craft knife
  5. Patterns.

Steps To Follow:

Step 1: Print a Stencil Design

Finding and printing a printable stencil design you’re passionate about is recommended before starting. It’s very important to start doing something you’re passionate about, whether that’s making a homemade card, creating intricate patterns for your walls, or designing furniture.

Step 2: Transferring the Design

Option-1: Using a blank stencil requires you to simply print out an image and tape it to your design. The stencil blank can be taped either above or below the design if you are using a transparent blank stencil. The design will have to be taped on top of a non-transparent stencil blank if you are using one.

Option-2: If you’re using a sharpie or a fine tip marker, trace around the design directly on the stencil blank. When you mark straight lines, you should use a ruler.

Step 3: Cut Out the Stencil Design

Use a vinyl cutter or a precision knife to cut out your design. Be careful not to rip the stencil material accidentally. When cutting straight lines, a ruler may come in handy.

Step 4: Utilize Your Stencil

It’s time to use your new stencil! Get creative with your new stencil by painting a wall, decorating furniture, or making DIY cards to give to others.

Tips for Stenciling

Printable Sunflower Stencil

Below you will find some tips on how to stencil effectively.

  • Ensure the paint is thicker. It is less likely to bleed under the stencil if the paint is thick.
  • Ensure that your stencil will not move during the painting process by adhering to the surface before starting.
  • You can also use a sponge or stencil brush instead of a paintbrush.
  • Paint the wall several times with light coats. Overuse of paint may result in the color leaking through the stencil.
  • Whenever you want to use your stencil again, clean the stencil after you’re done.
  • When you paint with a stencil, make sure the surface is entirely flat.
  • Before painting on the real material, try out your stencil on a practice piece.

How to Transfer Sunflower Outline to Watercolor Paper

  • Use standard printer paper to print the sunflower template.
  • You can see the sunflower outline through the window when you tape the printed template to it.
  • Trace over the printed outline of the sunflower with a soft lead pencil.
  •  Make sure you leave enough lead on the paper so it can be easily transferred.
  • The sunflower template should be placed on your watercolor paper face-down, with the pencil traced outline pointing upwards.
  • Trace your pencil line onto your watercolor sheet to transfer it to the sunflower outline.
  • You’re done! Having a transferred shape is much easier than drawing it from scratch!
  • Your watercolors are now ready for use, so get painting!

Watercolor Stencil: Using the Sunflower Printable

  • The sunflower stencil must be printed out on mylar or transparency paper before being used as a watercolor stencil.
  • After printing out your design, use a craft knife and a cutting mat to cut out the flower shapes.
  • You can test out the stencil position on your watercolor paper by placing it on the paper.
  • Before applying your top layer to your watercolor painting, you can apply a light wash of color first. This will give your watercolor painting a great layered look!
  • Spray the stencil with repositionable craft spray if you’re satisfied with the placement.
  • Your watercolor paper should adhere to the sticky stencil with a firm grip.
  • Your page is now ready to be painted with watercolors. Paintbrush manipulation is needed to paint into crevices and small spaces of stencils. Always work with a light touch to prevent watercolor paint from bleeding underneath the stencil.
  • Before removing the stencil, let the paint dry completely.
  • If you use a plastic stencil, wash it with warm water and soap before reusing it.
