How to Draw a Castle: 2 Methods

Castles are the true hallmark of creativity and ingenuity. While they may seem intimidating to draw at first, they’re actually pretty easy once you get the hang of it. In this article, we will be walking through how to draw a castle and how to draw a medieval castle step by step. The best way to learn how to draw is to jump right into it. Let’s start.

How to Draw a Castle: Method- 1

Step- 1: Draw a house shape.

Let’s start by sketching the left side of the castle using some very basic shapes. Create a triangle by beginning with a triangle. A parallelogram shape should be drawn to the right of the triangle, touching the edge. The right edge of the triangle should be parallel to the right edge of the triangle. Connect a horizontal line to each corner, then draw three vertical lines. So far, we’ve got the basic shape of a house.

Step- 2: Draw a tower next to the house.

Under the house shape, expand the vertical lines. Next, draw two rectangles, one tall and one short, to the right of the house shape. Essentially, these two rectangles depict a tall tower or cylinder attached to a castle. Make a thin rectangle on top of the cone and a thin rectangle on top of that. Next, sketch a tower similar to the first but larger.

Step- 3: Draw past the tower.

Draw vertical and horizontal lines on the back tower and a tiny cone shape. Add a roof to the tower on the right in the foreground. Continue to draw the roof at the same slant as before. Next, draw a horizontal line on the tower that bends midway across the face.

Step- 4: Draw more of the castle.

Continue drawing the medieval castle using basic shapes. Draw a rectangular prism jutting out from the side facing us a short distance. You do not yet need to connect the top. Soon, we will add the roof. On the lower portion of the castle, draw horizontal and vertical lines as you normally would. Make the tower look cylindrical by curving the lines. Make the tower look circular by drawing another cylinder and cone above it.

Step- 5: Draw the middle of the castle.

It is time to move on to another part of the castle. For the roof sections, continue sketching rectangular prisms and curved triangles.

Step- 6: Draw the roof parts.

More tall rectangles need to be drawn. This drawing shows part of a castle tower with angular corners that are greater than the normal 90 degrees. Draw a horizontal line to represent the roof base. Sketch the outline of a tall tower on the right and an outline of a tree to the front. The roof should be constructed with rectangles and triangles.

Step- 7: Draw short vertical structures on the roof.

The next step is to sketch out a series of thin, rectangular-prism-like structures that shoot up from the lower roof edge. These structures have their own individual roofs.

Step- 8: Draw a protrusion on the castle’s left side.

Source: Let’s Draw Today

An unusual rectangular protrusion is visible on the left side of the castle. Sketch a long, narrow side with an angular bottom. Next, draw a line ascending to the top. Draw an angle on the roof.

Step- 9: Draw the finished outline of the medieval castle.

In the foreground and on the left side of the castle, lightly sketch the outline of some trees. To outline the stone structures at the castle’s base, draw lines extending downward under the section between the main part of the castle and the right tower. Create an arch as well. Complete the outlines of the tree branches on the right. Include a lake in the background and some rolling hills. This completes the castle’s outline.

Step- 10: Shade the left side of the castle.

Then we will begin shading the roof and the left side of the castle. Additionally, we’ll add various structural details, such as columns, windows, and other components. On the left side of the drawing, draw several short black vertical marks to mark the spaces between the pillars. Almost all of the left side should be in shadow since the sun comes from the right. Additionally, draw a deep cast shadow just below the roof, shade it, and sketch downward from the top of the roof.

Step- 11: Shade the tall tower in the rear.

Put a very light shading layer on the white part of the castle that faces us. Draw vertical lines from the pinnacle of the tall rear tower to the shaded roof of the cone. You can sketch the battlement near the top and the arch-shaped design underneath it. Add a dark shadow to the left and place it between these spaces.

Step- 12: Add windows and details to the front.

Here are the steps to draw the castle’s multiple windows and pillars. Sketch an upside-down “U” shape or arch shape. Make a second row. Keep going until you have three rows. To keep everything aligned, a horizontal guideline might be helpful. On the right side of the castle, draw the same black marks. Create shadows by contouring the arch shapes.

Step- 13: Draw battlements and windows on the castle tower.

The cylinder roof should be shaded in the same way as the tall tower. Add more shading to the left side of the roof. Just underneath, draw some arches. Create a cylinder-shaped tower with some windows down the middle and a thin shadow on the left edge.

Step- 14: Draw windows on the middle part.

In the middle of the castle, continue adding details and shading. Continue in a similar manner as before. Shade the roof and cast a shadow beneath. Remember that the tower’s left side will be shaded more since it faces away from the sunlight. The rows of windows and pillars should be drawn in alignment with the floors that have been drawn already.

Step- 15: Draw stone and an arch under the castle.

On each face of the building, draw parallel horizontal lines on the ground at the base of the castle. Repeat this process with short vertical lines. The result is similar to the pattern of a brick wall. Include more shading on the right side and roof. Next, build windows and shade on the tower and the rest of the castle behind it. Cover the arch with dark shading and surround the structure with bricks.

Step- 16: Finish the main part of the castle.

It’s now time for the next section, which has angular corners. I think the floor might behalf of an octagon. Make the left wall the darkest. Make its right wall a little lighter. Next to it, make the lightest wall. On the left side of the castle, sketch the windows and other architectural details.

Step- 17: Redraw the castle’s right tower.

It’s time to fix my giant tower and replace it with a more proportional structure to the real castle. Sketch a line slightly above the roof to align the tower’s top with this horizontal guideline. Similarly, the flat walls of the tower should extend slightly above the main roof.

Step- 18: Draw the top of the tower.

After drawing the curved walls and the cone roof on the tower, draw the top of the tower. The sketch still looks a little longer than the reference, but it should be close enough to use.

Step- 19: Draw a roof and battlements on the top.

Make the left side of the roof darker by shading it. Make a line from the vertices to the base of the roof. Draw the dark shadow under the roof swooping toward the left as you complete the upper area of the tower.

Step- 20: Draw arch designs near the tower top.

Perhaps there are some arrow slits at the top of the tower, or maybe just some windows. Draw a thin sideways rectangle as you work your way down. Follow that with two horizontal lines. Finally, draw three arches along the top row. Continue drawing lines until you reach the second horizontal line. Your angle should remain the same as your sides. Add dark shadows to each arch structure.

Step- 21: Draw arrow slits and shadow on the castle tower.

Sketch more window openings or arrow slits on the right tower of the castle. Cover the tower’s left side with a shade. You’re all done with the castle. Let’s move on to the surrounding of the castle.

Step- 22: Draw hills around the castle.

In the background, add some shading to the hills. Make the hills in the distance a bit lighter. Alternatively, the tops of the hills can be made darker, while the lower portions of the hills can be made lighter to create a hazy appearance. Create horizontal lines to indicate water.

Step- 23: Shade the trees around the castle.

Now create a base layer, which will serve as a loose representation of the trees. Then, we will have plenty of vegetation around our castle with a few shadowy areas and a few trunks and branches here and there.

Step- 24: Draw the clouds and final details of the medieval castle.

Rather than rely on the reference image for a cloudy sky, we chose a less cloudy one. The lower part of the sky should be lightly shaded for this to work. Then sketch a cloud shape, keeping the upper part light and the lower part heavier.

Step- 25: Final result.

How to Draw a Medieval Castle: Method- 2

Step- 1: Draw a line across the page.

We will show you how to draw a castle easily in this method. So first up what you’ll need is paper, a pencil and a rubber. The first thing we will do is draw a line across the page of our castle’s base.

Step- 2: Draw another two streight lines.

drawing straight lines
Source: R.E.A.P N.Z.

Let’s draw another two lines up on each side of that line, about the same height.

Step- 3: Turn lines into rectangle.

rectangle drawing
Source: R.E.A.P N.Z.

Now turn it into rectangle. So draw another line beside those lines we drew earlier. And then connect those lines across.

Step- 4: Draw rectangle.

Source: R.E.A.P N.Z.

Over the rectangle you just drew, draw another rectangle.

Step- 5: Draw another rectangle.

rectangle series drawing
Source: R.E.A.P N.Z.

Draw another rectangle up at the same distance, just like the above image.

Step- 6: Draw more little rectangle.

Source: R.E.A.P N.Z.

At the top of these rectangles add another little rectangle. This would be kind of like turrets.

Step- 7: Draw 3 triangles.

castle outer shape
Source: R.E.A.P N.Z.

Now draw triangles out the top of those little rectangles. Make the triangles on each side slightly longer. Be sure each triangle of the two sides is the same size.

Step- 8: Draw little rectangle boxes.

Source: R.E.A.P N.Z.

As shown in the image above, create little rectangle boxes on top of these rectangles. It will look like this: a line going up and down.

Step- 9: Draw windows.

Source: R.E.A.P N.Z.

It would be best to draw some little windows in the castle. Simply draw a curve making a reverse “ U “ shape, and then draw a line across the bottom.

Step- 10: Draw the drawbridge.

Source: R.E.A.P N.Z.

Okay, then add a drawbridge of the castle. Therefore, draw another reverse U-shaped curve on a larger scale, and add more windows.

Step- 11: Add detail on drawbridge.

Added detail on drawbridge
Source: R.E.A.P N.Z.

Now we need some more details. Make the natural bridge look like it was formed with little wooden planks by drawing some lines down the drawbridge. Add another circular line around the drawbridge and some brickwork.

Step- 12: Draw brick pattern.

added brick pattern in castle
Source: R.E.A.P N.Z.

A small, rounded rectangle is drawn under each window as well as an Aires stylized, to give the effect of a little window. Draw a curved line around each window on the castle-like structure and add little bricks inside each one.

Step- 13: Add detail on turret tops.

Source: R.E.A.P N.Z.

The turret tops can be given more detail by adding almost bands of half circles, like in the image above. To illustrate slate roofs like that, all you have to do is join those small half-circles together and place them all over the roof.

Step- 14: Draw bricks on wall.

how to draw a castle
Source: R.E.A.P N.Z.

Add another detail, which is brick. So draw bricks like those shown in the image above to represent the actual bricks on the castle itself. The bricks add a nice texture as well as some nice details.

Step- 15: Draw bricks all over the wall.

Source: R.E.A.P N.Z.

The next step involves drawing more bricks over the castle and following the previous step.

Step- 16: Add gradient shade on triangles.

Source: R.E.A.P N.Z.

Let’s give it a bit more detail. We’re just going to apply a gradient shade across the entire scene but first the top part. First, we lighten the right side up a bit and then begin darkening the left side. Push the pencil a bit harder to darken up the left side.

Step- 17: Add gradient on the wall.

Adding gradient on the wall
Source: R.E.A.P N.Z.

You’ll now have to shade the bricks. At the top, they’ll be darker, and at the bottom, they’ll be lighter. Just make these blocks a little bit darker by shading a little bit and pressing more forcefully on those edges.

Step- 18: Add gradient on the wall.

castle outer shape
Source: R.E.A.P N.Z.

After that, provide a little bit of darkness to the windows and try to just color them. Make the shading in the windows slightly gradient.

Step- 19: Add gradient detail on all over the wall.

Source: R.E.A.P N.Z.

You can now add some darker shading to the bricks all over the castle. Press harder slightly closer to the line, and then release that pressure to make gradient shading.

Step- 20: Finally add flags.

Castle drawing
Source: R.E.A.P N.Z.

As a final step, you must draw two flags on the top of the 2 sides triangle. After you do that, shade the flags in a gradient manner. That’s how you draw a castle.

Final Words

This is a fun drawing lesson for all ages! You will need a pencil, an eraser, and some paper. Relax, take your time and have fun with this. Your castle will be very impressive in the end. The great thing about drawing a castle is that there are no hard and fast rules. The artist has the freedom to create whatever shape they want and use their imagination to come up with something truly special. With this simple step by step article, we hope to help you to draw a castle.
